so the biguns have been talking about art. a lively tweeting on twitter....see #sota11 and #sotaflash.

My main points are:

Without artists art organisations cannot exist.

Artists subsidise the public art experience
(OK if no organisations maybe artists wouldn't have convenient places to show work/perform but we are a resourceful bunch, surely?)

Artists often can't afford to go to these big conferences (well not even to some small ones)

And devolution drives me crazy at times (both art and politic wise - whole of UK needs to be devolved). Big national newspapers ignore Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland and talk of "the" arts council when they mean the one in England. It can cause cross border difficulties.

I knew it would rain in Blaenau Ffestiniog, but actually the day I arrived it was sunny and as I was wearing cordurioy shorts and spent some time leaning on a slope watching an artist turn his car into art, I got sunburnt knees. I had taken flowery mac, a present from india as a shorts waterproofing, and indeed it was needed. I woke to rain. Tents that don't have a porch are not useful in Wales. You can't sit with zip open and eat breakfast looking at the world without getting wet. This was the Grisedale Roadshow in partnership with the Real Institute in 2003.
Anyway this was Bedwyr Williams' s Blaenau Vista Club in the morning. I decided to go to Welsh classes after this. Awful to say but never bothered polishing up my Welsh because didn't seem much apart from poetry (and the fact that I lived in Wales and my grandfather spoke the language) that gave me good reason to put more money and time into it.....
It was a great two days. The youngsters of the town were feral and cheeky and ended up burning down the tent that held their work... art and destruction... and I got there by bus, my first of several epic adventures from south west Cymru to north.

I was sitting in Chapter Arts Centre and discovered how having lunch out with two small children (and their Ma) could make you invisible to some.
I saw a woman come in with small leaflets (B&W above). She carefully looked at people on each table and selected where to leave a leaflet with a brief interaction with the people selected, just a look mainly, but targetted marketing. Then someone that I kknow as a poet - and we have exchanged publications - came in and did the same thing!
No I wasn;t given a leaflet. I picked these two up from the table of a pair of lunching ladies...no they didn;t want the leaflets.
Both these events interested me...but i didn't interest the people selling them!

black ruffed woman, directs persistantly in list form. scratch scratch slice feather scrape. solemn persistant dedication. Formally set: a table that faces her across the auditorium at a right angle to the audience and a table in a video that faces us. She faces us from a time past. write scratchy writing seems to ghost in my head...it never happens in front of me, but there are phantoms from the past writing plays, writing masques, music even ... and stage directions. scratch scratch.

2 people leave the auditorium (separately). I wonder what is is that means they cannot stay to the end.

I am offered it at 20% off, I say yes."

I had to check out the copy in the reading room to make completely sure that I did want to buy it.

I shall print out this page that I found and leave it somewhere or other...I'll let you know...

20,000 people pitter patter past my window twice, this morning.

What is this not filling mugs up properly with tea? Leaving far more space than is required for milk. Especially annoying in mugs that flare at top, narrow at bottom.

walk into reading room at arnolfini, over my shoulder I hear " no bloody milk in there".

A little later I hear J R Carpenter being asked if she'd like a tea or coffee. Yes she'd like a tea. It arrives black; he apologising because there is no milk. I thought "I knew that....".

Bump into someone who was a student at Coleg Ceredigion when I was a tutor. Last knew of her doing foundation at Carmarthen...whilst Iwas a lecturer there. Nice to hear the story, the prograssion.

A man orders cake, he's a poet actually. He is handed the plate and lifts it to his nose to sniff it. He doesn't smile. One can't assume thought that he is unhappy.

My eyes really are not very good these days [the today that is the day that I write on I have been reminded by the optician that I am overdue an eye test].

I HATE THIS SO MUCH [I'm sorry but the this involved here will not be explained]

First Great Western Exhibition

This happened AGES ago in collaboration with M.H.; really, years.

Photographs of train windows were shown in the toilets of a first great western swansea to london train. The toilet window are a lovely ground glass lightbox type affair.All the images in standard class were of port talbot, and all the toilet windows face the stell works. Neat. First class had images of train windows in london.

Train windows are an ongoing (about 25 years) project.

I only had a snappy sort of film camera with which to document.

There were two of them but as I rested my camera on a tree I seem to have masked one with the other. I couldn't stay to the end. Did they achieve it?
The three long columns of love song titles were on the screen. they stood in their yellow macs with megaphones. They tried to memorise the list. I heard list one spoken missing last line. I noted that particular lines were sticking points. There were helpful and unhelpful hecklers and hummers.
It was just the the sort of performance that I could stick with, that I enjoy. Why do something if you know for sure you can do it?

tiny waves sparkle glitter at the feet of flocks of oyster catchers. Earlier in the morning I had heard a grass hopper warbler. They are on RSPB red list, but this year they are cropping up in new places. The cherry was lovely against the blue sky. Thinking about tone...sight and sound word, particularly important in black & white photography - well really should be grey scale! black and white has no tone, it is black and white! binary, positive negative. which I think creates a new poetry.Listen to accents on the train [later accents will crop up in conversation and at PW 10 . hear an elongated A in the word yesterday. See layers of the landscape reflected as I listen to these As.
One disadvantage of gluten free biscuits is that when you are travelling you get crumbs all over your clothes and deep into the folds/creases of the page of the book that you are reading.
Such heavy long real dream last night, a quaker funeral across two churches. Many people, no black clothes, all pale. silent prayer (recently have had a couple of dreams where I meditate or pray). Then I cry and cry on the shoulder of the stranger beside me.
At severn tunnel junction so many small trees all so very freshly green. And a sky like a June rain sky.
In the morning I don't seem to want to leave the building to go to the Arnolfni! Distract myself with lots of things small and large.
Spit spots of rain as I leave [I discovered since I left home that my blue warehouse jacket sheds colour when wet. I am wearing antique white, not the colour but the age!].
When asked to introduce myself i write something along the lines of "texture, touch, body, find the words or not. Plants."... I was participating in http://www.dispersal.org.uk/. The paper that I was writing on was thick and shiny in a linen sort of a way and proper letter press printed by Sinister Bird, Dartington. And hand perforated by sewing machine. A treadle with jig set up. Excellent!
Gets to one o'clock and I am not hungry but I am very tired...
Waiting to see/hear Redell Olsen I am fascinated with the wiring and the gaffer tape and other safety arrangements to secure everything to the floor. so beautiful, an work in itself.
She has much text and textiles - as she does in her performance the next day.

Language - the sounds that identify difference to me.
speech over identity
the dance - a conversation in Ireland that sounds a little like the Welsh: where are you from? Which always means where are you from, where are your parents from, where are your grandparents from. establishing an identity. assessing who you are.
words on walls. all around us.
spend time undoing how we don't want to be seen/heard. disassociate from a given identity. I'd say to disassociate from an assumed identity that others create on hearing my accent.
Sign wave speech wave PRAAT. average. extraction of information beyond word formation. a wave or a particle.
watching the hand of the man talking.
perceptions are not passive. we are creating/recreating constantly - it is not about a clear message sent and merely received but a message sent out and about interpretation/translation.

[remember my trip to Totnes/dartington in December, so many well spoken people...and an over hearing of very middle class affluent conversations. Then finally at Totnes station as I am leaving a train arrival announcement in a local accent!]

BUT I say stories held in the body, the memory by individuals and communicated by the the tongue have been a long tradition - writing it down kills it, alters the memory capacity of the story teller and encapsulates the story there and then, never to change with the times so it can make the same tale relevant to the new time.

at the bus stop with my new daps, nice collection of shadows and reflections.

ok so Cardiff buses now have only two fares (well there is the weekly one too) £1.50 single and £3.00 Day To Go. This little phrase "to go" is somewhat over used and occasionally totally pointless. Well, I mean, a day ticket for the bus is about going isn't it? Food To Go lets you know you can probably handle the package on the street and eat in a fairly orderly manner as you scamper about town, getting indigestion and grubby fingers, just right for shopping for silk fripperies. So I buy a Day To Go ticket and manage to use 4 buses, because I have to get across town and that takes two buses. I had bought a Day To Go on the Sunday used it twice planned another return journey but on discovering that it being a Sunday I would have to walk back, stayed in with a book.

it has been quite wet at times on and off this summer. In August more than 9 inches fell. Sometimes it was great, exhilerating, exciting. Sometimes it wasn't.

The bottle of water contains only a small amount of liquid. She shakes it, takes a swig then, holding the cap in her left hand pours some water in. She places the botle between her knees, transfers the lid to her right hand, tips the water into her cupped left hand. puts the cap back onto the bottle with her right hand only. Then rubs water over both hands, thoroughly. She pauses then wipes her hands on her stripy over jumper.
She places the bottle on the seat beside her, where an umbrella already rests, folds her fleece jacket and pats it down on top of these two object.

5 out of 6 hens that showed a preference chose to lay an egg in the grubby old hay (in their least favourite nest box) rather than in freshly shredded newspaper. There are 7 hens, one didn't lay that day.

House sitting with animals and meterological readings to do. Forgot to feed the cats and dog yesterday. When I went to do met. readings found Harry (cat) up garden staring at grass. He turned to me with a "well I suppose I have to catch my own breakfast then" look.

Night before last Bertie didn't come in from his night time meanders with me. He returned much later all wet from long dewy grass and looking very pleased with himself.

on the coffee front again. Another place for macchiato in west Wales. This time at the cafe in the West Wales Art Centre, Abergwaun/Fishguard. Good art good food.

asparagus soup and a mountain of bread. The menu is varied and delightful, very foodie, but be warned also very bready... non wheat eaters ask for soup with no bread then you won't be tempted and regret it later.

As a collaborator of mine has been blogging nice places for tea I thought I would put in a word for coffee. Last Saturday I visited fforest outdoor, in Aberteifi/Cardigan, not to buy clothing for vigourous wet outdoor adventures but to have a cup of coffee. What a delight: a place that has macchiato (cortado) on the menu so that I don't have to ask for an expresso with touch of milk. And very very good flapjacks. Comfortable and interesting decor...and reindeer hides......

this morning I had to work out how to stop the machine and persuade it to open the door. I am used to top not front loaders. I did manage to change it to the final 3 minute water drain programme after some false (and frustrating starts)
Also it was sunny and the glasses would be far more useful on my face than in the washing machine.

The western telegraph classic car run! an unexpected treat. we sit at the cafe with coffee and croisants and watch the motors & bikes. what a lark. much tooting and waving. we keep thinking that we shall go home as it is a touch draughty but we get hooked on waiting for the next bunch. Tra La La amazes herself by liking cars now that she didn't like before, as she remembers them as dreadful hooray henry cars in days gone by. a good stock of morris minors and travellers for me to look at. we decide we need to go to where they start and get a lift for the circuit next time! in fact why don't we hang out at classic/vintage rallies??

off to the edge of river and sea on one of the several very big tides. found an island and made it mine for a little while, marking it with my red handbag.

the big tides mean the sea comes in and out faster creating many interesting undulating patterns in the sand.

The exhibition is officially over, but some photos remain in situ. One mega bus sunset has been removed/liberated/stolen. I have taken the rest from the window as the super duper spary (think I'll leave that spelling error for spray in seems appropriat) mount didn't have enough duper for a hot telephone box. The blue bottles have bred at an alarming rate dispite the quantity of spiders, maybe the spiders can't eat that many without queasiness ensuing.
Only one foul/crude/unwritable message in the visitors book from a dubble reddit, who thinks I stik and suggests that I go away.
Was touched by the range of people who took the time to visit, or use it as an excuse to also walk up Foeldrygarn.
Several phone calls were made in and out, I don't know if any of the visitors chose to call a friend and chat for twenty minutes for 40p.

20th April Early music choral concert in the church. Beautifully decorated for a wedding tomorrow, the church gate woven in ivy and purple flowers. I’m quite young compared with this audience, by a decade I’d say! Though the performers are probably some 20 years younger than me! ‘My soul is weary of my life’. Hyacinth scent floods the air of the cool church. Will they never quieten behind me? How much they can say about nothing.

18th June. Wind ripples a puddle on pembrey & burry port station and sometimes it sparkles as it catches the sun.
I remember putting myself in one of M’s coats – maybe two. I am glad that I did, a ghost of me will wrap around him during inclement weather. And the memory/ghost of the action stays with me in weather foul or fair.

A diary full of missing m, how silly but that is how it is. Can I really afford say a year or two of grief getting over it? No, so I shan't. What did he last text? ‘maybe one reads meaning into these events (me watching the new moon & venus). And those meanings re direct ones life’. Maybe they don’t. But I can choose to make symbols of experiences if I so wish. I wish there was a switch to redirect my life. Does he think that my feelings were so vague that they disappear? I have never loved so deeply, trusted (on nothing), been so committed. The idiot. We could be suffering blissfully together instead of miserably apart. Hmm exactly who is the idiot????
I keep getting a grip of myself but my grip slips, anyway as was demonstrated in occupational therapy, I don’t have much of a grip to start with.

I find a new tea room exquisite and loose tea my first thought is to tell m my second that he doesn’t want to know. So long without him but there he is. Damn! Anyway I’ve joined a dating agency. Good. I found my horoscope for the day I joined something about getting out there!
The worst part is I feel that I learnt a whole new way of communicating – verbal written physical emotional, I really expressed myself but now he is gone I can’t use it. What was the point? It’s like finally learning to write when there is no-one left who can read. No, I have to believe there is a wonderful world out there, full of wonderful people. And I'm learning all the time. We're all in it together!
